Types of Motherboard slots - Memory Sockets and RAM

For a computer system to efficiently carry out its standard operations and execute various programs, it requires memory for data handling. On standard motherboards, a device known as a memory socket, memory slot, or RAM slot is provided for the insertion of computer memory. Depending on the configuration of the motherboard, there may be two to four memory slots, and the slot types present will dictate what type of RAM may be inserted. In this blog, we will discuss memory sockets and RAM more in detail, allowing you to know how to procure compatible computer hardware for your computer system.

Whenever you are looking to purchase a motherboard or a new computer system, it is important to be aware of which type of RAM may be inserted into the memory sockets of the board. Throughout the years, RAM technology has continuously advanced with newer generations introducing quicker data rates. While systems dating prior to 2002 may feature a single data rate (SDR) memory stick, it is not uncommon for newer models to have DDR4 technology that of which boasts much greater performance and speed. With newer generations of RAM, motherboards have been adapted to accommodate their connection and functionality and thus older and newer computer hardware parts are often incompatible with one another. As such, it is crucial that one confirms the type of RAM slot they have before purchasing computer memory to ensure that the correct generation is chosen. DDR4 and DDR3 SDRAM memory sticks generally serve as the most common types in the present, due to the fact that they are compatible with computer systems dating from 2007 to the present.

If your chosen motherboard has RAM slots that are colored differently from one another, that denotes the availability of dual-channel configuration. In such instances, pairs of RAM should be installed together in the same color slots. As such, four sticks should be separated into pairs and placed in the corresponding colored memory sockets. If you have only two memory sticks, they should both be installed in the same color slot to ensure proper functionality.

Beyond computer hardware compatibility, the choice of RAM may also be affected by operating system software. With an operating system such as the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Basic, only 8 GB of RAM may be used by the computer system. With 64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows 10, however, much greater amounts of RAM may be installed, ranging anywhere from 128 GB to 2 TB depending on the operating system. While these diverse limitations may make choices more confusing, the typical user relying on more basic software types will often find 8-16 GB of RAM to be sufficient for daily use.

Lastly, when choosing types of computer memory, it is recommended that one procures multiple memory sticks that add up to the desired value of RAM, rather than purchasing one big stick. This is because multi-channel computer memory configurations can often achieve more optimal performance as compared to a single stick of the same size. Additionally, having multiple sticks creates redundancy for computer hardware, as one stick failing will still leave the system with functional devices so the computer may still be used until the memory stick is replaced. Whenever one is replacing computer memory or procuring new hardware, one should always ensure that all sticks are compatible and feature the same timing and clock speeds for optimal performance.
