Cable strain relief and protection

Electronics have quickly become the backbone of countless processes in our daily lives, allowing us to easily communicate over long distances, improve work productivity, have instant access to news, and so much more. Despite electronics coming in various shapes and forms, almost all rely on conductor and cable components that ensure their proper functionality. These components, alongside many other electronic parts, are often sensitive to strain which results from bending, pulling, tugging, or sheathing. As strain can quickly degrade the health of various components, it can be very useful to have a basic understanding of cable strain relief and protection.

The electric cable and electrical cord components that support computer hardware, networking devices, and other various electrical systems are often at risk of losing functionality with high strain, thus they must be properly managed and situated during manufacturing and use for their protection. The ends of a rigid metal conduit can easily cut through the insulation of a conductor, thus an internal wire strain relief is regularly implemented to mitigate the chance of an electrical short. Generally, these components can be placed around the conductors, sliding into the flexible conduit. Once situated, the conduit is then placed within the connector that is attached to an electric cable enclosure or conduit junction box.

If an electrical cord features jacketing, there may be a few forms of wire strain relief that may be employed. Cord grips, or cable gland components, are a common type. With a cable gland top component, flexible cords may have their insulation protected from the sharp edges of an enclosure or electrical box that may cause penetration. Additionally, the use of a cable gland also prevents the cable from being pulled out of the box itself.

The choice between protective components will also often depend upon the environment in question, some warranting the use of a metal alloy while others may work well with a plastic cable strain relief grip. When procuring such strain relief cord grip components, either a straight or angled configuration may be used. If pulling is not an issue, some strain reliefs may also facilitate the passing of cables through holes implemented on furniture, boxes, enclosures, and other various pieces. A universal bushing, such as (25) bushing parts, can be placed within a drilled hole for the passing of various cables. When procuring any cable passing component, it is important to be aware that split designs and fixed diameter designs are both common.

While most of the aforementioned electrical parts are meant for electrical cables, there are also many strain relief products that may benefit assemblies such as fiber optic cables and low voltage cables. For fiber optic technology in particular, bushings or parts that feature a small radius bend and cabling smoothing are best. Due to the method of operations that fiber optics present, kinking or overly small radius bends can quickly deteriorate the quality and health of cabling.
